GEORGIA'S FIRST CHOICE IN MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION TREATMENT FOR OVER 40 YEARS
Substance abuse (including tobacco, prescription and illicit drugs, and alcohol) tops $740 billion every year in the United States. Incredible as this figure is, it pales in comparison to the dire emotional and relational costs addiction causes. The pain of addiction impacts the not only the individuals living with drug or alcohol dependence but their loved ones too.
But how can you know when it’s time to talk to your loved one about their drug or alcohol dependence? The following three signs could indicate that your loved one is living with substance addiction and could benefit from individualized drug or alcohol treatment.
He or she frequently seeks out or talks about their drug of choice. They may appear anxious or restless if they run low or run out. He or she may go to extremes to maintain their supply—such as asking others for money or stealing.
Instead of participating in the activities they used to enjoy, your loved one may start to isolate him or her so they can continually use their substance of choice. Continuous use occurs when your loved one has built up a tolerance to their drug of choice and they are attempting to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
Every aspect of a person’s life can become negatively affected by drug or alcohol dependence—from their relationships to finances, career to health. But even if your loved one recognizes these negative impacts, she or he may still continue to engage in substance abuse behaviors—or repeatedly attempt to cut back or quit. In most cases they fail detoxing at home.
Voicing your concerns with your loved one about his or her drug or drug or alcohol dependence can be difficult, but it can make a difference.
